summoning sickness in general
Asked by Glaspo 13 years ago
I know how summoning sickness works with creatures. But does it pertain to ALL permanents, like artifacts and such? And does it only apply to those of them that require tapping in order to do something? And how about creatures Thames just enter the battlefield but have and ability that doesn't cause them to tap like Azure Mage for example.
Also, do Planeswalkers have summoning sickness? For example if I just put into play Jace, Memory Adept can I use him right off the bat or must I wait until next turn?
Sorry about all these questions in a single post but I need to clear up some of this confusion lol. Simple to the point answers are preferred despite the length of this post lol

Basically this:
All permanents suffer from summoning sickness.
Summoning sickness only affects creatures though.
So:
"If you play a land, you can tap it for mana straight away as it's a land not a creature."
"If you play a manland and then immediately animate it you can no longer tap it for mana as it's a creature and you can't use tap abilities of creatures unless you've controlled them continuously since the start of your last turn."
"If you play Gideon Jura you can immediately +2, -2, or 0 him as he's not a creature, and doesn't tap when you use any of them."
"If you play Gideon Jura and immediately 0 him you cannot attack with him as he has summoning sickness and is now a creature."
"If you play Azure Mage and still have the mana to activate him immediately, you can as it doesn't have a tap symbol in it's cost."
"If you play a card:Gideon's Lawkeeper you cannot activate it's ability immediately as it has a tap symbol in it's cost."
"If you have a Grand Architect out you can immediately tap it for mana as there is no tap symbol in that ability's cost. Likewise you can tap any blue creature for mana with the Architect's ability even if they have summoning sickness due to the no tap symbol and it not being the creature's own ability."

"302.6. A creature's activated ability with the tap symbol or the untap symbol in its activation cost can't be activated unless the creature has been under its controller's control continuously since his or her most recent turn began. A creature can't attack unless it has been under its controller's control continuously since his or her most recent turn began. This rule is informally called the "summoning sickness" rule."
That's the official ruling of it.
