Splinter Twin vs Naturalize

Asked by joga 13 years ago

So my opponent has Splinter Twin on Deceiver Exarch, can i still do something with my Naturalize to prevent myself from losing?

I'm guessing the moment i cast naturalize, my opponents can respond with a gazillion copies.

No, the Naturalize will go on the stack but they can respond to that by tapping and creating a copy which will untap the original, their abilities all go on top of the stack and will resolve before your Naturalize at the end of it all you will destroy the splinter twin but he will still have a million exarchs. In short, your correct.

... I realized im wrong. Dont listen to me. There are certain points you can cast Naturalize to stop it. If you wait until they actually use the ability to copy then you will be able to break the combo.

Penumbra is right, you can do it if you're careful about the timing. If you cast Naturalize in response to the activation of the copy ability, then your spell will resolve first, destroying the enchantment. Your opponent will still get the token copy, but the combo is broken because Splinter Twin is gone.

Here is how you have to stack it.

Opponent attempts to copy Exarch by tapping it.

You Naturalize the Splinter Twin in response to the copy.

You pray that your opponent doesn't have a Counterspell in hand.

Assuming everything resolves, they get a hasty exarch, with an ETB effect, but nothing more. So you proceed to Surgical Extraction their Splinter Twin , and they scoop. But this is irrelevant once Innistrad releases, as Zendikar rotates :(

It would be,

Cast splinter twin

Splinter twin resolves

tap for a hasted copy

cast naturalize

copy resolves and ability goes on stack

naturalize resolves first destroying splinter twin

deceiver exarch is untapped

no more copies.

as long as your respond to the splinter twin combo and the opponent does not have another way to untap the creature you can stop the combo

how ever if he response to you naturalizeing his splinter twin he can make ifinent copys before the naturalize resolves

the weakness in the splinter twin combo is that the ability needs to resolve before the copy of deceiver exarch comes into play untaping the original so you can make another copy

if the original with the splinter twin is tapped it cant tap to respond to the naturalize to continue the combo

@ Penumbra

its would be

Cast splinter twin

Splinter twin resolves

tap for a hasted copy

cast naturalize

naturalize resolves killing th enchantment

splinter twin resolves puting the copy into play

the copys abilitys goes onto the stack

the copys ability resolves untaping one of his creatures

no more copies because splinter twin is nolonger in play.

you can do the same thing with any spell or ability that would ither kill the enchantment or kill the creature at instant speed, just wait for him to make the first move

O the natrualize resolves before the splinter twin? i guess i forgot about that "destroying an abilities source doesn't stop the ability from triggering" thing, I wasn't to far off but thanks for the correction =)
