SpellSkite Questions

Asked by MrLizard 12 years ago

Can you change the target of an aura enchantment card like [spirit mantle] to Spellskite ? Can you change the target to Mana Leak to Spellskite ? Can Spellskite be countered if it is already on the field?

Not completely sure about the first, I think you can, since Spirit Mantle is a spell until it resolves. Mana Leak can't be retargeted to Spellskite since it isn't a spell being cast.

Spellskite

Targeting is an additional cost to casting it as long as the spells says "target" and not "each." yes, you can change the target of Spirit Mantle to Spellskite because it is a creature and can be targeted. You cannot, however change the target of Mana Leak to Spellskite because it is a creature and not a spell. Basically, a target can be redirected to Spellskite as long as Spellskite is a legal target.

To be clear, you can change the target of Spirit Mantle to Spellskite if it is being cast or attached by an ability that targets, if it is put into play it will become attached without targeting. For example, if a Spirit Mantle is in the graveyard and returns to play via Nomad Mythmaker you can change the target with Spellskite however, if it returns to play with Sun Titan you will not be able to target the Spellskite because the Spirit Mantle is not targeting.

Nomad Mythmaker doesn't target, so you can't use Spellskite on the Aura.

You can't change the target of a spell or ability if there's no target to begin with.

@w999: Targeting is NOT an additional cost; it's part of the casting/activation/handling of spells/abilities.

Whenever an effect allows you to change the target(s) of a spell or ability, the new target(s) must be legal, regardless of whether or not the old ones were. If Spellskite is not a legal target for a targeted spell or ability, then its ability won't do anything (note that Spellskite 's ability may still be activated targeting a spell or ability for which Spellskite itself is not a legal target).
