Spellskite and Kolaghan's Command

Asked by GlistenerAgent 8 years ago

The situation is as follows:

I have a Blighted Agent and a Spellskite in play. My opponent casts Kolaghan's Command, choosing to deal 2 damage to my Blighted Agent and destroy my Spellskite. I know that I can redirect the 2 damage part of the spell to my Spellskite. If I do this, and then resolve Vines of Vastwood on my Spellskite, will the effect of Kolaghan's Command be nullified? This made sense to me, but at the same time seems strange.

Yes.

Each of Kolaghan's Command's modes independently targets something. The targets for the third and fourth modes can therefore be the same object. And if the target becomes illegal for both of those chosen modes, the spell is countered by the game rules. Vines of Vastwood will achieve that objective just fine.

It's worth noting, however, that if a different permutation of modes were chosen, the spell would still resolve because the other target would be legal, but it wouldn't do anything to the illegally-targeted Spellskite.
