Soulbound mechanic
Asked by Ohthenoises 13 years ago
Ok just trying to get a handle on this new mechanic, If I have out Nightshade Peddler and I play Silverblade Paladin can I choose which creature uses it's soulbound? or do they use it on each other?

So I could use Silverblade Paladin 's soulbound to pair with Nightshade Peddler then I could potentially play another Silverblade Paladin and use Nightshade Peddler 's soulbound to get that one?

No, Because the Nightshade Peddler Will be bonded to the first Silverblade Paladin . However, I wonder if both creatures will have double strike death touch, or if they will only get the effect related to the creature that you used the soulbond ability for.

The card seems to read clearly. They would both be double strike deathtouch.

Better example: (ignoring mana here) Turn 2 Nightshade Peddler turn 3 using the Silverblade Paladin 's soulbound trigger to bind to the Nightshade Peddler turn 4 I play Tandem Lookout can I use Nightshade Peddler 's soulbound trigger because the Tandem Lookout isn't bound yet?

No, because Nightshade Peddler is bonded to Silverblade Paladin already, the link works both ways. Therefore if a creature is bonded to another creature whether or not it was due to its own soulbond ability, it cannot be bonded to another creature.

That was said in the first response, now I believe once one of those creatures leaves the field, the other remaining creature could be bonded to the next creature to come into play as a new soulbond.

alright.. I was hoping to be able to abuse the hell out of that with Joint Assault . (cast it on a Nightshade Peddler who was paired with two creatures >:) haha.)

I would just like to note, I believe Ohthenoises was simply misreading the ability. Because it says "another unpaired creature", it implies that the creature with soulbond must also be unpaired to pair with another creature. And also, the second ability is worded so that it does not care how the two creatures became paired, as long as they are paired they will both have that effect. So if you pair Nightshade Peddler with Silverblade Paladin , it doesn't matter which bonded to which, they will both have double strike and deathtouch because they are paired.

Here's an odd question that I raised when discussing Soulbond with my friends...
Does Soulbond target? For instance, could I bond a Nightshade Peddler with a Mirran Crusader , or a Silverblade Paladin with a Phyrexian Crusader ?

If a spell or ability targets anything, it must use the word 'target' in its rules text. So no, Soulbond does not target.

Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something in the comp rules for Soulbond. Thanks, KorApprentice.

You may choose. Note that if Nightshade Peddler
is paired to another creature, then you cannot choose to have it pair with Silverblade Paladin
, Soulbond only allows you to pair it with an unpaired creature.
