Sacrificing and Morbid/Undying

Asked by UmbrotheUmbreon 13 years ago

Okay me and my counselor (who has yet to learn to just listen to me >3> ) were playing a game. I used FlingMTG Card: Fling on my Strangleroot GeistMTG Card: Strangleroot Geist. He says that sacrificing is not killing it so therefore would not trigger Undying. I tried telling him that sacrificing is considered dying, and that if it said destroyed instead of die, that it wouldn't work.

Question: Does sacrificing a creature trigger Morbid and Undying?

Yes. the creature would be put into the graveyard from play, therefore it died. and would come back (provided it didn't have any +1/+1 counters on it)

That's what I tohugh and knew, but my counselor ain't the brightest Magic player. I have been teaching him how to play, and he still has yet to learn to listen to me about mechanics >.< Much like that time he told me Emrakul, the Aeons TornMTG Card: Emrakul, the Aeons Torn could be countered, when I tried explaining to him it can't.

His argument was that the card had to be in play for the effect to work xD I told him it's not a trigger ability or an activated ability. It's just an ability.

Well at least he understands some mechanics of the game.

I can see where he's coming from though. we have all been at a point where we thought something would work until proven otherwise. that's why i browse this site all the time I've learned a tremendous amount from this site alone.

Well I've been playing since Ravnica :3 I'd even dare to say as far back as Darksteel....damn Colossus >.<

I pretty much know the ins and outs of the game, the exception being the stack. that thing always confuses people, no matter how good a player they are.

No matter why Strangleroot Geist is put into a graveyard, whether it's been dealt damage equal to ist toughness, it's been sacrificed or destroyed by Day of JudgmentMTG Card: Day of Judgment - it's put into its owner's graveyard from the battlefield und thus considered dying. Undying will trigger in each of these cases, provided that it died with no +1/+1 counter on it.

Thank you! Which means Morbid is also triggered if Undying was triggered.

700.6 The term dies means "is put into a graveyard from the battlefield." It is used only when referring to creatures.

That's the actually entry from the comprehensive rules.
