Sacrificing and graveyard resolution timing

Asked by UniqueUserID 8 years ago

Since sacrificing is part of the cost of an ability it happens immediately (doesn't use the stack), my question is does the card resolving go to the graveyard immediately/use the stack?

Let's use Mirror of Fate as an example.

I use Mirror of Fate's ability. Is the mirror in the graveyard already? Can I exile it with Scrabbling Claws to allow it to reenter this new library?

To sacrifice something is to put it into the graveyard from the battlefield. The sacrificed object is, by definition, put into the graveyard as you sacrifice it. So yes, you'll be able to pull off the Mirror of Fate interaction.

In this case you can bring Mirror of Fate back how you said since it will be in the graveyard to be targeted by Scrabbling Claws and exiled before the mirror ability resolves, and the mirror ability does not target.

Something like Apprentice Necromancer can not return himself because he has to target something in the graveyard with the ability and choosing targets happens before paying costs when activating an ability or casting a spell.

Thank you both. I'm off to look in the mirror and think about the horrors to come...
