Sacrifice Order and Tergrid

Asked by ImNora 1 year ago

Okay, so let's say my commander, Tergrid, God of Fright  Flip, is on the battlefield as my only creature and I play Innocent Blood. In what order do the sacrifices occur? Can I steal a sacrificed creature with Tergrid, God of Fright  Flip before I have to sacrifice a creature myself, so I can sacrifice my newly acquired creature instead of Tergrid herself? Basically, do I need a creature on the battlefield other than Tergrid, God of Fright  Flip in order to benefit from her trigger on spells that force ALL players to sacrifice a creature?

Thanks in advance!

Amusingly enough, this EXACT situation is used as an example of rule 101.4: "Example: A card reads 'Each player sacrifices a creature.' First, the active player chooses a creature they control. Then each of the nonactive players, in turn order, chooses a creature they control. Then all creatures chosen this way are sacrificed simultaneously."

While the order in which the creatures are chosen to be sacrificed may vary depending on who played the spell, the fact remains that they will all be put into the graveyard at the same time. Thus, there is no window for Tergrid, God of Fright  Flip to steal something and then sac it. If Tergrid is your only creature, you will have to sacrifice her to Innocent Blood.

Also, Tergrid's ability is a triggered ability (starts with "when/whenever/at"), and if a triggered ability triggers during the resolution of another spell or ability, it has to wait until that spell/ability is completely finished resolving before being put onto the stack. In your example, Tergrid's triggers won't even be put onto the stack until everyone is finished sacrificing creatures to Innocent Blood, including you.
