Rules Challenge - Mutavault
Asked by KrazyCaley 11 years ago
Here's a good ol' blast from the past, to prepare you all for the second coming of that perpetual rules nightmare Mutavault .
I control Mistblind Clique championing Vendilion Clique
, two Spellstutter Sprite
s, and three 1/1 black Faerie Rogue tokens with flying.
My opponent controls Mutavault
. He activates its second ability, then casts Mirrorweave
targeting it.
What are the characteristics of my creatures?

I'm a little curious about the champion effect though. Will the vendilion still be connected to the mistbind after the effect ends? my guess is yes since the card never leaves play and therefore keeps its memory.
but if the mistbind is destroyed while being a land i guess the vendilion is lost for good

Please fix ambiguity by replacing instances of 'it'. It makes the post must easier to reply to correctly. Describe the situation more and it won't be a nightmare to answer.

You will be left with 6 Mutavault s that are unactivated. At end of turn they will all go back to being what they were at the beginning of the turn. Unless, Mistbind Clique is destroyed, this should have no interaction with champion since the card itself never leaves play. If the Clique is destroyed while being a Mutavault then the Vendilion Clique will not return because the Clique does not have the champion ability while it is a Mutavault .
Here are the rules for why it becomes an unactivated Mutavault:
503.2. When copying an object, the copy acquires the copiable values of the original objects characteristics (name, mana cost, color, card type, supertype, subtype, expansion symbol, rules text, power, toughness, loyalty) and, for an object on the stack, choices made when playing it (mode, targets, the value of X, whether a kicker cost was paid, how it will affect multiple targets, and so on). The copiable values are the values that are printed on the object, as modified by other copy effects, by as . . . comes into play and as . . . is turned face up abilities that set characteristics, and by abilities that caused the object to be face down. Other effects (including type-changing and text-changing effects), status, and counters are not copied

Yep, Kirtanian is correct on this.
There's even a gatherer ruling on the Mirrorweave page that says:
This effect can cause each other creature to stop being a creature. For example, if you target an animated Mutavault (a land with an activated ability that turns it into a creature), only the printed wording will be copied -- the "becomes a creature" effect won't. Each other creature will become an unanimated Mutavault.

hmm.... Mirrorweave ing a Mutavault durring combat... possibly the most convoluted "Fog" effect yet?

Wait, if copying copies expansion symbol, then If I have a Greater Morphling on my field, then I play it's ability to make its expansion symbol Arabian nights, then play Mirrorweave and then make its expansion symbol zendikar, then I play City in a Bottle , will it kill everything but the morphling?

Mistbind Clique
I guess your creatures will all become unactivated mutavaults.
