Question on Emrakul and his graveyard ability
Asked by mmdw34 11 years ago
Say im milling another player and Emrakul, the Aeons Torn hits the graveyard in response to him hitting the graveyard can I Crypt Incursion to exile it to prevent him from either activating the ability or from emrakul going back into the library
Yes, you can. When Emrakul is put into a graveyard, it triggers his ability. Before that ability resolves, you can cast Crypt Incursion to exile all creature cards in the target player's graveyard. However, your opponent will still shuffle his graveyard into his library.

Emrakul's ability is triggered (starts with "when/whenever/at"), so it goes on the stack and can be responded to. Ripping Emrakul out of the graveyard won't stop the ability from resolving, but the cards you exiled won't be among the ones that get shuffled back in.
Note that this is a different situation from a card with a replacement effect (usually have "as", "with", or "instead" somewhere in the description), like Darksteel Colossus or Progenitus . There's no opportunity to respond to those, as they get applied immediately.

Yes you can respond to it. Emrakul's ability is a triggered ability and like any other uses the stack. However, the ability will still resolve. While Emrakul itself and all other creatures will be exiled by then because of Crypt Incursion , its owner will still shuffle what is left of his or her graveyard into his or her library.
