Question about walls and defenders.
Asked by Dreno33 12 years ago
Would Axebane Guardian add up walls as well? Like Wall of Ice? Or only walls like Angelic Wall?
Also, would the enchantment Rolling Stones work on creatures like Axebane Guardian? or no?
Lastly, would Wakestone Gargoyle's ability work with creatures like Wall of Ice as well or no?
For some reason I feel like all of the older cards were named walls and now the newer version of them are called defenders but apply to each. I feel like this could easily be a stupid assumption as well, haha. Just curious because I am creating a deck revolving around Doran, the Siege Tower and have to cut 15 more cards to make 100. Decisions Decisions!!!
I believe so. You are right that in the old cards they were called walls, that's because the type wall intrinsically meant that they couldn't attack. Wizards changed this and created the keyword defender, and all those old cards were retroactively gven defender.

okay so just that I understand,
1) Axebane Guardian applies to every wall / defender
2) Rolling Stones applies to every wall / defender
3) Wakestone Gargoyle's ability applies to every wall / defender
correct?

Rolling Stones only applies to Wall creatures with defender. If you click on the card tag you can read the oracle text for yourself.

Any walls printed before the keyword defender was created have been errata'd to just have defender. If you have a way to remove defender from them, they are able to attack. So, to answer your questions, Axebane Guardian would count walls as creatures with defender, Rolling Stones would not work on Axebane Guardian because he is not a wall and Rolling Stones only affects walls and Wakestone Gargoyle would allow a wall to attack because it just has defender.

A good place to look for a card's current errata'd form is Gatherer. There you'd see Wall of Ice as a simple 0/7 Wall with Defender.
"Walls" is now a creature type, just like Elves or Zombies. It doesn't innately give Defender anymore. Again, check out Gatherer.
Rolling Stones allows Wall creatures to attack as though they didn't have Defender. You can't put Rolling Stones on Ogre Jailbreaker and expect him to attack (without a Gate).

ok thank you guys. Im going to get rid of my non-wall defenders in the deck then since Rolling Stones do not apply to them. great help!!

GreatSword rolling stones isn't an creature enchantment, it's a regular enchantment.
Anyway yes, walls have defender, no defenders are not necessarily walls.

After the Kamigawa block, there was a change in how walls work. All new walls are now printed with the Defender ability. All previous walls contain errata which remove the "Walls can't attack" clause and replace it with Defender. Basically, every wall has defender ability now. Rolling Stones text has also been changed to "Wall creatures can attack as though they didn't have defender". I hope this answers all your questions.
