'Proxies' at FNM

Asked by Vanguard001 9 years ago

So I'm heading out for my first FNM Modern event (I've attended two drafts prior). I've been using Flood Plain as Flooded Strand, and Swords to Plowshares instead of Path to Exile in casual play due to budget and that my LGS doesn't have any Path to Exile in stock ever. Is it completely fine to use Flood Plain as Flooded Strand and Swords to Plowshares as Path to Exile, as long as I have a separate paper listing the effects, as well as telling my opponent before the match?

No, not in a sanctioned event. Those cards are not legal in modern, so they are not suitable replacements. If your FNM is not sanctioned, you should be fine to do this, however.

That's too bad... I guess I'll have to figure something else out. Thanks for the response, though.

I mean - it's not really an FNM if it isn't sanctioned. Considering FNM is a mandatory event for any DCI registered store.

Proxies in any sanctioned event are not legal. That's basically the beginning and the end of it. You either have the cards or you do not. The only proxies that are legal are ones that are pre-approved by and issued by the head judge at major tournaments for a myriad of circumstances. None of those apply here however.

And as DevoidMage pointed out, both of your "proxy" cards are illegal in the format anyway.

You should only ever use proxies in unsanctioned events where all players have previously agreed to allow them.I know of many events at stores that allow players to use proxies (Vintage, Modern No-Ban-List, etc.), but Wizards won't sanction tournaments that allows proxies.

From the official Mtg Tournament Rules:

3.4 Proxy Cards
A proxy card is used during competition to represent an Authorized Game Card that has been accidentally damaged or excessively worn in the current tournament (including damaged or misprinted Limited product) as determined solely by the Head Judge.

Proxies are not allowed as substitutes for cards that their owner has damaged intentionally or through negligence.

Players may not create their own proxies; they may only be created by the Head Judge. When a judge creates a proxy, it is included in the players deck and must be denoted as a proxy in a clear and conspicuous manner. The original card is kept nearby during the match and replaces the proxy while in a public zone as long as it is recognizable. A proxy is valid only for the duration of the tournament in which it was originally issued.

Official checklist cards in the Innistrad Block are Authorized Game Cards and may have a proxy issued by a judge.
