Primordial Hydra Q's

Asked by Wolfinsteen 11 years ago

So, Primordial Hydra doubles on upkeep. What if you miss the double, then realize after draw phase? So, Corpsejack Menace , does it double Hydra? Because there is a difference between DOUBLING counters and ADDING twice as many. What happens if Madcap Skills is on Hydra? If I Unexpected Results into Hydra, what happens?I'd like actual ruling here please. For all game types and from the book if you please.

  1. It all depends on the setting you're playing it. If you're playing at a high REL event, you don't get the trigger at all. However if you're at FNM, chances are your opponent will let you do it.

  2. Yes. The Menace would double the number of counters being placed onto the Hydra, so you would add counters equal to 4 times the number of counters that were on when it triggered.

  3. If Madcap Skills is on the Hydra, it'd always have 3 more power than toughness and can only be blocked by 2+ creatures. Note that Primordial Hydra says to double the number of counters on it, and Madcap Skills doesn't add any.

  4. If you cast anything with X in its mana cost without paying the mana cost, X is considered to be 0, meaning that the Hydra would enter the battlefield and immediately die due to SBA.

Sorry I don't have any rulings from the book for this, I don't have time to search for each individual rule for each question.

Okay thanks. So, if I play my friend, and I say no to the Hydra(it's his huge win condition), it doesn't double? Because everybody at FNM said it is a "Must Happen" step because it doesn't say "You MAY", instead "put", which is forced. But I agree with your ruling.

On higher levels of REL, if you miss a trigger you don't get it, even if it's supposed to happen. If your friend forgets it a lot, I'd make him miss the trigger instead of allowing him to do it past the time. However if he only misses it every so often, I'd just let him do it anyway. The game doesn't track things for you, it's up to the players to remember their own triggers and when they happen.

I thought so, he does miss it all the time. I try to call it out so he gets better at magic after the trigger passes, because people will call that out at FNM. He flips tables...

Right. I'd remind him every turn if you're playing kitchen table so it gets ingrained into his mind to check for a Hydra during his upkeep.

Oh, and can I Unexpected Results into hydra and only pay the X? Probably not, right? Then I would have to pay the two green as well?

Unexpected Results says you may play it without paying its mana cost. It doesn't give you any other options for playing it. You may not elect to pay any portion of the mana cost yourself. It's free or not played at all, in the Hydra's case, leaving X=0

The thing is, you only may pay for it without paying the mana costs, so X will always be 0 at that point. That means if you don't have any static abilities on the field that buff your creatures (e.g. Gaea's Anthem ) the Hydra will immediately go to the graveyard due to state-based actions.

acbooster is wrong. You would triple the number of counters if you had corpsejack and the hydra. This is because you place X counters, where X is the number on it, but corpsejack doubles that so you put 2X counters on it.

There are actually rules for low REL events like FNM about the missed triggers. If you notice it within one third turn you get the trigger without question since it hasn't most likely effected anything.
For reference turn thirds are:
1.Beginning of turn to end of first main.
2. Combat phase from start of beginning of combat to the end of end of combat phase.
3. From beginning of second main phase to end of cleanup.

Unless something has changed since I last heard Joe Bono talk about the triggers then this should be the official rules for low REL events.
