Primal Surge explained? Are lands permanents etc.?

Asked by WalzY 12 years ago

So anything that's not an instant/sorcery is a permanent in standard format? Essentially if you have no instants/sorceries then Primal Surge puts your entire deck on the battlefield, meaning if your opponent can't kill you on his next turn then he loses basically?

You are essentially correct, but there are certain things that need to be cleared up.

Indeed, everything that's not a sorcery or instant card, is a permanent card (as far as current card types are concerned). Though, if you do, what you describe, when your next turn comes, you'll be requred to draw a card at the beginning of your draw step. Since your library is empty, you'll lose the game because of that. You'd need to kill your opponent during your upkeep at the latest, in order not to lose for being unable to draw a card.

Lands are permanents.

Whilst in theory yes you could place everything in your deck onto the battlefield at once, it might not be advisable to do so for the very reason that Absinthman mentions. Its a cool idea though on how to make a deck explode in terms of power and kick ass very quickly.

Primal Surge works best when it is the only nonpermanent in your deck, you can get to it consistently, and you run 4x Craterhoof Behemoth .

Another option for the win when you put your whole library on the battlefield, aside from creatures with haste, would be to have Laboratory Maniac in your library.

Just remember you do not HAVE to place all of your cards on the field... You could always just choose to stop at any point.

Tunde is actually getting onto something here. It is true that the card allows you to stop at any time, so once you see that your board state guarantees (well, nothing is ever guaranteed) a win, you can stop exiling and keep a part of your library intact as a failsafe.

now what if you played a land for your turn does primal surge still go off and allow you to orical text it to the field?

One land per turn restriction only applies to your inherent right to play a land from your hand. There is no restriction for how many lands you can put onto the battlefield based on other effects during one turn.
