Persist and additional +1/+1 nad -1/-1

Asked by phepa 4 years ago

I have Winding Constrictor, Good-Fortune Unicorn and Safehold Elite on board and i sacrifice my Safehold Elite (with no counters on it)... what is going to happen? Some says, that he will enter battlefield with 2 -1/-1 couters and immediately die cause of state based action of having 0 toughness before Good-Fortune Unicorn have chance to trigger. Other says that is some kind of replacement effect and no effect is going on stack and Safehold Elite enter without any counter. And last version i heard is that placing -1/-1 counter and +1/+1 counters both going on stack and you can chose +1/+1 to resolve first?

I believe that in the situation above your creature would die before the unicorn’s triggered ability resolves and saves the safehold elite.

Persist makes the creature enter with the counters. Good-Fortune Unicorn is a triggered ability when the creature enters the battlefield. What will happen is that Safehold Elite will enter with two -1/-1 counters. When it enters Good-Fortune Unicorn will trigger. The trigger does nothing at this time, because it must go on the stack and wait to resolve. SBAs are checked ant eh Safehold Elite will die. Then the trigger will go on the stack. Once everyone passes priority over the Good-Fortune Unicorn trigger it will resolve, but do nothing.
