Parallel Lives + Anointed Procession = Infinite Combo?

Asked by IrishMidgetMan 7 years ago

Say I have Sliver Queen, Parallel Lives, and Anointed Procession on the field. I activate Sliver Queen. Do the effects of Parallel Lives and Anointed Procession bounce off each other infinitely? Key words for both being "If an effect would put tokens onto the battlefield..."

No. There is a single event "Create a 1/1 colorless Sliver creature token," and there are two relevant replacement effects, that of Parallel Lives and that of Anointed Procession. You choose one of those replacement effects, let's say Parallel Lives, it doesn't really matter. The event is now "Create two 1/1 colorless Sliver creature token." You now look for any replacement effects that have not been applied to the event. Anointed Procession is still relevant, and it's unlikely any new effects are relevant, so you apply the only relevant replacement effect. The event is now "Create four 1/1 colorless Sliver creature token," and it's unlikely there are any other relevant replacement effects that have not yet been applied.

From Gatherer pages for the cards:

9/22/2011 If you control two Parallel Lives, then the number of tokens created is four times the original number. If you control three, then the number of tokens created is eight times the original number, and so on.

4/18/2017 If you control two Anointed Processions, then the number of tokens created is four times the original number. If you control three, then the number of tokens created is eight times the original number, and so on.

These aren't rulings based on the fact the permanents have the same names, but rather a property of multiple replacement effects being present.
