Oblivion Ring and protection

Asked by Wizard of the Damned 13 years ago

A friend has argued that Oblivion Ring can target emekrul even though he has protection from all colors. Can someone explain how this works if it does?

Oblivion Ring can target Emrakul, the Aeons Torn because Emrakul has protection from colored spells. Spells being the key word here. Oblivion Ring targets when it enters the battlefield, ie, when it is no longer a spell, and is therefore not prevented by Emrakul's protection.

goober1223 is correct.

Oblivion Ring , while a spell on the stack, does not target. Once it resolves, it becomes a permanent, and it's triggered ability targets Emrakul, the Aeons Torn . This is perfectly legal.

Yep. This is also true for Journey to Nowhere . It is a permanent when it targets not a spell. Sorry.

so with that logic are you suppose to wait for after a counter war to target something?

No. Counters like Mana Leak target while on the stack. Oblivion Ring states When Oblivion enters the battlefield, exile target nonland permanent. This is a triggered ability.

Yes, you are supposed to wait for after a counter war before you name your target. Since Oblivion Ring is no longer a spell when it targets. You should cast O-Ring and wait until your opponent says it's OK before you target.

Ah, didn't realize it was about O-Ring specifically. Sorry.

It's ok, I asked a question within a q/a instead of making my own so confusion is understandable.
