Ob Nixilis, Unshackled ruling?

Asked by Gimpusoid 10 years ago

Came across a situation we couldn't quite resolve yesterday. I had Ob Nixilis, Unshackled on the board and opponent used Sunforger's ability to search his library for a Lightning Helix in order to do him in. Question is: does Ob's ability kick in as he searches his library, as it's a passive ability, before he gets the chance to cast his Lightning Helix? If so, he's a 5/5 and the move is pointless. Or does Lightning Helix "out-stack" his ability, leaving him still a lowly 4/4 in the path of doom?

Please link all cards in your question:
Ob Nixilis, Unshackled
Sunforger
Lightning Helix

Lightning Helix only does 3 damage and as such it doesn't matter unless Ob Nixilis already has damage marked on him For the sake of argument lets assume he does or you meant Warleader's Helix .

The relevant abilities from Ob Nixilis, Unshackled are not static abilities but triggered abilities. When your opponent searches Ob Nixilis's damage/sacrifice ability triggers and goes on the stack after they search. Then there is around of priority passed before it resolves. At this time they could cast the Warleader's Helix , which would resolve before the ability. They would still have to loose the 10 life and sac a creature, but Ob Nixilis never got any bigger. Technically his ability to put a counter on himself never even triggered.

Also why is the full art Lightning Helix showing up and not a useful one with text.

Okay, thanks man, I'll remember link them in future, rookie mistake.

Yes, yes, I did mean Warleader's Helix , thanks. So basically, he dies before he gets the 1+1 but then his other ability resolves eventhough he's left the field. Cool, nice one man, makes sense.

@Gidgetimer : Sunforger 's ability had to completely resolve before anything else is put on the stack. The ability casts the spell, so there is no round of priotrity before the Warleader's Helix gets put on the stack. So baring any other spells it would go like this:

Sunforger ability goes on the stack.round of priority
Sunforger ability resolves causing the player to search the library and cast the Warleader's Helix which is put on the stack.
Ob Nixilis, Unshackled 's first ability goes on the stack
round of priority
Ob Nixilis, Unshackled ability resolves causeing your opponent to sac a creature
Ob Nixilis, Unshackled 2nd ability goes on the stack if a creature died
round of priority
Ob Nixilis, Unshackled second ability resolves giving him a counter
round of priority
Warleader's Helix resolves dealing 4 damage to a 5/5 creature.

I'm sorry, I didn't RTFC. pskinn01 is correct. Since Warleader's Helix is cast as part of the resolution it goes on the stack first and then Ob Nixilis, Unshackled 's ability. please reselct his answer as the correct one.

Thanks pskinn01, this is how I thought it would go but I'm relatively new and I don't fully understand when things resolve, I was wangled out of a win so. This shall not be forgotten!!!!
