Nim Deathmantle vs Child of Alara

Asked by chosenone124 7 years ago

I have a Marionette Master, Nim Deathmantle, and Child of Alara.

Child of Alara dies and triggers. Marionette Master "sees" Nim Deathmantle die and triggers.

Since Nim Deathmantle "sees" Marionette Master die, can I use it's trigger to reanimate the Master?

Yes, that works. Marionette Master's and Nim Deathmantle's triggered abilities are "leaves the battlefield" triggers, and triggered abilities like that use information from the last moment something was on the battlefield to determine if and how they trigger. The Deathmantle getting destroyed will cause the Master to trigger (and you'll use the Master's power from the last moment it was on the battlefield), and the Master getting destroyed will cause the Deathmantle to trigger.

Will Nim Deathmantle return to the battlefield to attach itself? 701.3a seems to imply that attaching causes it to pull itself from whatever zone, including the graveyard.

Nothing in the wording seems to imply that it can't recur itself, but it seems odd that it can self reanimate.

You can only attach a permanent. When you resolve Nim Deathmantle's ability you'll carry out as much of it's instructions as you can. You'll pay , then return Marionette Master from the graveyard to the battlefield, then fail to attach Nim Deathmantle to it. The card does not reanimate itself.

Ah, I just realized that 701.3a refers to "Equipment" not "Equipment card". Thanks Neo.

Also, because the ability triggered from the battlefield it's still referring to the "Nim Deathmantle" object that used to be on the battlefield. The card in the graveyard is a different object.
