Mox Opal and legendary timing
Asked by smackjack 11 years ago
I have 1 Blinkmoth Nexus , 1 Ornithopter and 1 Mox Opal on the board. Can i cast another mox opal and tap the first one for mana before the second one gets sacrificed by the legend rule?
No. You will put one of the two Mox Opals into the graveyard (but not sacrifice it) as a state-based action before you could activate either of them.
If you animated Blinkmoth Nexus first, you could activate the first Mox Opal, float the mana, and play the second Mox Opal and put the first one into the graveyard.

I don't believe so. You could tap it in response to playing the second Mox Opal , but at that point the second one won't have resolved so you won't have enough artifacts (I'm assuming that's why you're asking?) Once the second Mox Opal resolves game state will be checked, and that's when the legend rule will take effect, forcing you to sacrifice.

Note that the legend rule never forces you to sacrifice anything. The excess legendary permanents are simply put into their owner's graveyard. This is not a sacrifice, it is a state-based action.
