Modular question and instant removal

Asked by defrag 3 years ago

My opponent has:

Arcbound Lancer , Throne of Geth and Mindless Automaton.

My opponent taps Throne of Geth, targeting Arcbound Lancer. The modular creature then goes to the graveyard, and he intends to move the +1/+1 counters onto the Mindless Automaton

In response to Arcbound Lancer dying, I cast Dismember , targeting the Mindless Automaton ... The Mindless Automaton would just die and the +1/+1 counters would be simply "lost", correct? Assuming my opponent didn't have any other artifact creatures?

Thank you!

you would do it in response to arcbound lancer targeting mindless automaton, rather than in response to lancer dying. the counters from the lancer would then be lost even if the opponent still had other artifact creatures, but the automaton would likely still get a counter from proliferate.

The short answer is yes. Once the Lancer dies, its death trigger goes on the stack of opponent the target. If you destroy the target or otherwise get it off the battlefield or make it an illegal target, the modular ability will fizzle and the counters that were on Arcbound Lancer will cease to exist.

As a side note, Throne of Geth doesn't target. You sacrifice an artifact as a cost of the ability, so the Lancer will be sacrificed before anyone can respond. You can respond to the modular trigger and the proliferate ability, but not the sacrifice itself.
