Mimeoplasm vs Instant Grave Hate

Asked by lil_cheez 4 years ago

Hello pals,

Player A casts The Mimeoplasm , and Player B has some kind of instant grave hate ( Nihil Spellbomb or Selesnya Eulogist or whatever).

What is the last moment possible that Player B can answer to the Mimeoplasm?

I understand that it is fine to answer to Mime being cast (as Player A is not exiling anything yet) but is it possible to answer later?

Additionaly, let's say when Mime resolves there's only one creature in all graveyards. It can exile that creature and become a copy of that with no +1+1 counters or it just enters as a 0/0 Ooze and dies?

Thanks in advance!

Since these are related questions, I'll answer them together. The Mimeoplasm's ability is a replacement effect that changes how it enters the battlefield. That means it does not trigger, and you cannot respond to that effect. As such, you must respond to the Mimeoplasm before the spell resolves.

The Mimeoplasm's ability says you must exile two creatures for the rest of the ability to take effect (if it were otherwise, it would read "up to two creatures"). As such, if there is only one creature card in the graveyard, Mime would enter as a 0/0 ozoze and would die.

No, the last possible moment to answer is when Mimeoplasm is the top card of the stack. Otherwise, it will start resolving and nothing can be activated or cast during that process.

Regarding the second issue, the gatherer entry for Mimeo is pretty clear:

You can’t choose to exile just one creature card.

So, in that case Mimeo will enter as a 0/0 creature and in most cases, die.
