Metamorphic Alteration interactions with Sudden Spoiling

Asked by Penguno 5 years ago

Situation:

I have a Priest of Titania and another creature (lets say any vanilla creature) on the field, both with haste. My opponent casts Sudden Spoiling on me.

Question: if I used Metamorphic Alteration on my vanilla creature, targeting the priest, will the creature be able to use the priests ability or will it still have its abilities taken away?

The answer is it depends on when you want to activate the ability.

After Sudden Spoiling resolves, your creature will be a 0/2 and cannot activate its ability.

However, Priest of Titania's ability is a mana ability. Mana abilities are are defined as abilities that produce mana, don't target, and are not Planeswalker loyalty abilities. Split second does not prevent activation of mana abilities, so, in response to Sudden Spoiling, you can activate the vanilla-now-Priest of Titania ability and gain the mana. This mana can then be used until mana empties.

A note: Metamorphic Alteration only targets the creature it's enchanting. The one it chooses to be copied is not targeted.
