Master of Wavesfoil vs Anger of the Gods

Asked by Sethes5 11 years ago

Does pro-red mean that a creature can't be damaged by red spells, or just targeted by them? I wanted to know if when i cast Anger of the Gods if my Master of Waves would survive.

It would survive. Protection reduces damage to 0 from red sources. Does not need to target, just needs to receive damage from a red source to reduce it to 0.

It means they cant be targeted by red spells or abilities. it also means red creatures can't block it and if you block a red creature with him he wont take damage. but Anger of the Gods doesn't target him so yes it will affect him.

@Fizzz: Technically, protection outright prevents damage; the damage is never dealt.

Protection represents a list of things in Magic.

  1. Damage that would be dealt to the protected object by a relevant source is prevented.
  2. The protected object can't be enchanted or equipped by permanents of the relevant quality.
  3. The protected object can't be blocked by creatures of the relevant quality.
  4. The protected object can't be targeted by spells or abilities from sources of the relevant quality.

If an effect would do any of those things, protection stops it.

I beg to differ GinjaNinja, as the rule states:

702.15e - Any damage that would be dealt by sources that have the stated quality to a permanent or player that has protection is prevented.

The rule is not related to targeting the Master, it is a source that deals damage. http://mtg.wikia.com/wiki/Protection explains very well how protection work, and it differentiates Damage, Enchanting, Blocking or Targeting as 4 different things protection protects from. :)

Ok, thanks guys. I got confused because someone said that Soldier of the Pantheon would die to Supreme Verdict . I guess the difference is that Anger of the Gods deals damage, whereas Supreme Verdict destroys all creatures

@Sethes5: That is correct. Supreme Verdict doesn't do anything that protection would stop, so having protection won't save a creature from being destroyed by Supreme Verdict .

I use the Acronym DEBT to remember protection:

Damaged

Enchanted

Blocked

Targeted
