Liege of the Tangle
Asked by allstarmvpe 13 years ago
I'm a bit confused on Liege of the Tangle . Can the creatures I create attack on the same turn? Also, can I still tap them for land since it says "they are still lands"? Thanks
Well.
You can attack with creatures only if they are untapped, and you have a second combat phase, generated by something like World at War .
What Liege of the Tangle does is wake up the lands you decide to target. As it mentions on the card, those lands remain lands, but also become creatures. So you can still do all the normal things you could do with lands, like tap them for mana, sacrifice them as part of an effect, except now they are also creatures, so you can attack, block etc. with them.
Hope this clears things up.

Thanks guys. This helps a lot. Do you think I should play this card or Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite in a G/W deck?

We would need to look at the deck first to decide with any certainty which will benefit you more.

they can not attack the same turn because they are not creatures untill the combat step is over
also if the land came into play the same turn it will suffer from summoning sickness

You don't create any creatures. You put awakening counters on existing lands under your control and those lands become creatures in addition to being lands. That means that they can tap for mana, but are also subject to summoning sickness.
For example, if you play a land and then Liege of the Tangle 's ability puts an awakening counter on it that same turn, that land will not be able to attack or be tapped for mana because it is now a creature with summoning sickness.
If you were able to get a second combat phase (such as through activating Hellkite Charger 's ability), then all lands with awakening counters which are not subject to summoning sickness and are not tapped will be able to attack during that phase.
Note that Liege of the Tangle's ability triggers as a result of it dealing combat damage to a player, so the declare attackers step has already passed by the time it would resolve. You would have to create a second combat phase in order to attack with the awakened lands.
