Legend Rule / Planeswalker uniqueness rule

Asked by TJMadMan 8 years ago

Planeswalker uniqueness rule means if you have two planeswalkers with the same name one of them becomes sacrificed as a state-based action. see Liliana of the Veil and Liliana of the Dark Realms.

Legend rule says two legendary creatures with the same name cannot exist on the field at the same time, and one dies as a state-based action. ie you can't have two Krenko, Mob Boss on the field.

With the release of Battle for Zendikar, they re-released the legendary eldrazi: ulamog, emrakul, and kozilek.

Is there a legendary uniqueness sort of rule that pertains to two legendary creatures with the same Formal name, if not the same titles

ie Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger and Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre

My understanding of the rules is that because they don't have the same full name, that they can exist at the same time, per the legend rule. I was interested about any legendary uniqueness rule that possibly limits legendary creatures that have the same name, but not the same full card name.

I'm pretty sure I already know the answer, just curious of the communities thoughts and feelings.

The legend rule only looks at the full English names of cards. There is no rule that looks at various cards depicting the same character from game lore.

Note also that the community's thoughts and feelings aren't really of use here; the rules are a black-and-white affair except perhaps when it comes to event management and judge discretion.

You do not sacrifice because of either the planeswalker uniqueness rule nor the legend rule. All but one of the permanents are simply sent to the graveyard as a state-based action. Things that trigger on sacrifices are not triggered.

The legend rule only cares about the full English name of the card. There is no rule about legendary creatures that excludes the same lore character from appearing on multiple cards at the same time if those cards have different names.

Thanks for the timely, and well articulated response Epochalyptik. I had a feeling that was exactly how the ruling would go. I also want to apologize for my stumbling of words, I did not mean to suggest the communities thoughts and ideas would change how my playgroup would interprate the ruling. I simply wanted to start a conversation because I think it is an interesting topic. Again, thanks for the response, and reinforcing the enforcement of the ruling.
