Legal times to play instants
Asked by maxon 11 years ago
Is there a window of time to play instants after the beginning someones upkeep, but before the untap step, or do they happen at the same time? Reason I'm asking is I'm trying to see if I can combo Quicken with Reap Intellect could be an answer to Espers "end of turn" Sphinx's Revelation in the hopes of being able to exile all their AEtherling s. (assuming one's not already out)

Untap happens first, during which no Player receives priority. all that can be done is untapping. Then upkeep. if You are the active player you must pass priority to end the step. if you are the inactive player, this is the first opportunity to cast spells or activate abilities. Then draw... same thing as previous. pass pass.. begining of turn phase ends.
Basically, at the end of your opponents upkeep, you could play Quicken , hold priority when it resolves and then cast Reap Intellect To exile the targets before they could cast a creature during their main phase.

@Mithrandrir You cannot retain priority after a spell resolves on an opponent's turn.
116.3b The active player receives priority after a spell or ability (other than a mana ability) resolves
However the phase or step doesn't advance until both players have passed over an empty stack so If the active player does not cast anything you receive priority again before the phase or step ends.

The Beginning phase has 3 steps: Untap, Upkeep, and Draw. They happen in that order. No one has priority to take any actions during the Untap step, and the active player gets priority first during the Upkeep step.
However, after a spell or ability resolves priority passes around again before the game moves to the next step or phase. After Sphinx's Revelation resolves during your end step, you can cast Quicken and Reap Intellect before the step ends and the game moves on to the next turn.
