Land Tokens

Asked by GlimmerKing 11 years ago

I control a Vastwood Animist , I use his tap ability to turn one of my lands into a creature. I cast Stolen Identity to copy that land creature. Basically, what I am asking is "Can I populate lands?".

Though I do realize that it has to be a creature token to be able to populate

Vastwood Animist 's ability doesn't change the copiable characteristics of the land, so although you can target the animated land and make a copy of it, it will enter the battlefield as a normal land.

Just use Sundial of the Infinite before your turn ends and you'll keep your elemental land creature.

Sizzlewump That's not true. The turn will end regardless of whether or not Sundial of the Infinite is used, and so "until end of turn" effects will wear off. The trick with the Sundial is exiling "at the beginning of the next end step" abilities while they are on the stack so they don't return.

Actually, that wouldn't work. Sundial of the Infinite explicitly says that "until end of turn" effects end when you activate it.

Check the sundial on gatherer. It explains that the turn goes directly to cleanup and the stack is emptied.

just to clarify, "until end of turn" is for continuous effects and don't use the stack and they happen during the cleanup step..

"9/22/2011 Ending the turn this way means the following things happen in order: 1) All spells and abilities on the stack are exiled. This includes spells and abilities that can't be countered. 2) All attacking and blocking creatures are removed from combat. 3) State-based actions are checked. No player gets priority, and no triggered abilities are put onto the stack. 4) The current phase and/or step ends. The game skips straight to the cleanup step. The cleanup step happens in its entirety."

"514.2. Second, the following actions happen simultaneously: all damage marked on permanents (including phased-out permanents) is removed and all "until end of turn" and "this turn" effects end. This turn-based action doesn't use the stack.*

Exactly. "Until end of turn" effects stop during cleanup.

Sizzlewump you're not understanding, 'until end of turn' happens in the cleanup step. which is what rule 514.2 is about. You don't get to keep the land as an elemental.

Check this link where they start talking about Flickerwisp . EOT effects disappear as long as the dial is activated during the eot step.

(not sure how to link on here yet..)

That's "at the beginning of end step" effects only.

@Sizzlewump: You're incorrect in this case.

"At the beginning of the/your (next) end step" abilities can be exiled or skipped by Sundial of the Infinite , but "until end of turn" effects still end. EOT effects wear off at the cleanup step, and ending the current turn means, among other things, progressing directly to the cleanup step. In fact, Sundial of the Infinite 's reminder text specifically says "'this turn' and 'until end of turn' effects wear off."

Flickerwisp is another case because it has a triggered ability that triggers at the beginning of the end step. Flickerwisp 's ability doesn't create a set-duration effect that wears off.

Sizzlewump, that is not "until the end of turn" effects, that is about "At the beginning of the next end step" effects. The latter use the stack and it's correct in what you're thinking, when they are on the stack, use sundial, they are exiled, move to clean up step. "Until the end of turn" effects are in the clean up step that sundial jumps to, players typically do not get priority here, to do anything, at the same time these effects DO NOT use the stack. They are turn based actions that just happen. Defining typically, as something may trigger giving players a chance to respond, but this is after the discard, damage wears off and until end of turn, so even if you could activated sundial here, it's too late.

Until the end of turn IS NOT EQUIVALENT to At the beginning of the next end step.

That's where I was confused. Until end of turn and at the beginning of the next end step. My old-school knowledge of rules mixed them up. Thanks for clearing that up guys.
