Killing Indestructibility

Asked by Reallifenotbotatall 12 years ago

Ok I already know that to kill something that is indestructible you must make its toughness go to zero without the use of damage. However is a mix of damage and -X/-X work to kill something with indestructibility. In my example say you have a 0/2 creature with indestructibility and i have a 1/1. I attack with my creature and get blocked by yours, if I them gave your creature -1/-1 through say Tragic Slip , would you creature with indestructibility die? or would he then count as a -1/1 creature that has taken 1 damage?

No, that will not function. There is no way to kill that creature with damage. The only way to get rid of it is to reduce it's toughness to 0 (with -x/-x effects), to let you opponnent sacrifice it or to exile it.

It is a common misconception (usually because of DotP) that damage reduces toughness. That's just not true.

Say for example Predator Ooze. Indestructible so you can tragic slip him which is not the same as if he were murdered or killed off, or something like devour flesh when the opponent must sac a creature to which the ooze may be the only one on the field so this then causes the ooze to die whether its indestructible or not. So his toughness must be reduced to either 0 or force sac or even exile with like an oblivion ring.

They are all correct. Forcing you to sacrifice, giving a creature -x/-x or exiling are the only ways to deal with indestructible anything. This link should help you as well. Pretty much anything that states "Destroy" or "Damage" won't kill say Darksteel Myr However if you Tragic Slip it at any point (-1/-1) it will kill the myr since it is only 0/1

In the original example, after combat the indestructible creature will be a 0/2 with 1 damage marked on it. After you play (an un-morbid) Tragic Slip , it will be a -1/1 with 1 damage marked on it. Normally this would be lethal damage, but because the creature is indestructible it doesn't get destroyed.

There are some digital versions of the game (including Duels of the Planeswalkers) that seem to show damage reducing a creature's toughness, but that's not what's going on. It's simply a shortcut used to simplify the visual interface and give you an easy way of knowing how much more damage a creature will be able to take before dying.

And if you need a machine to tell you what has taken how much damage, then you rely too much on machines and are the reason for skynet.

Tragic Slip is a very good card against any indestructables. I normally play around it if I see black in someones deck however. If they are running green and you know they run a Predator Ooze then dont bother slipping the Arbor Elf first turn. Wait for the ooze to pop out and smash it.

And the answer to the would it die. Yes the creature would die because in turn it would be a 0/0
