Jace impersonator

Asked by thewyzman 8 years ago

if I play Clever Impersonator targeting Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip, would it flip into Jace, Telepath Unbound (assuming the transform ability is copied)?

No, when you tap your Clever Impersonator copy of Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip, if there are 5 or more cards in your graveyard, it would exile itself and return as a Clever Impersonator and you could copy a non-land permanent on the battlefield. The ability tries to return the card to the battlefield transformed but since it is not a double faced card it can not transform.

The first thing that would happen is state-based actions seeing two legendary permanents with the same name under a single player's control, making you put one of them into your graveyard.

Proceeding with the assumption that you sacrifice the original one (as you're asking about Clever Impersonator), you'd have a 2/2 Jace, Vryn's Prodigy copy that doesn't have a backside. Because of this, even if the condition to transform it would be true, you wouldn't transform it ever, as only double-faced cards can be flipped.

Also, in order for Jace to flip in the first place, you would need to activate it's activated ability, go through the motions, and would have 5 or more cards in your graveyard by the time the ability resolves and arrives at that part. No matter how you make Jace, Vryn's Prodigy enter the battlefield, it will never immediately transform into it's Planeswalker alter ego.

I should've specified the impersonator copying an opponent's jace

As others have said, non-DFCs cannot transform, and objects revert to their default properties when they change zones. It doesn't matter at all who controls what.
