It That Betrays interaction with ETB

Asked by Baconfish 5 years ago

Is it correctly understood that the effect of It That Betrays is a triggered effect as a response to a sacrifice, rather than a replacement effect, and sacrificing an Avenger of Zendikar would therefore trigger its ETB effect for the owner of It That Betrays ? And is it also correct that any sacrificed creature does die before being returned and effects from creatures such as Massacre Wurm will still trigger in response to a creature getting sacrificed?

The actual act of sacrificing doesn't go on the stack, so nothing is really "in response" to it. But yes, It That Betrays has a triggered ability and the creature will go to the graveyard and then be returned to the battlefield on your side, triggering any ETB that the creature may have or any other thing that triggers upon a creature entering under your control.
