Is it acceptable to reveal cards from your hand in EDH?

Asked by Heuristically_Programmed 9 years ago

Is it acceptable procedure to show people cards in my hand in order to achieve political aims?

Example:

3 player EDH game

Player 1 plays Thraximundar

Player 2 (Me) If you attack Player 3 instead of me then I won't Condemn your Thraximundar

It depends on your playgroup, but generally, yes - there's nothing wrong with revealing cards.

Strictly speaking from a rules-of-the-game standpoint, a player is always free to reveal any hidden information that they have access to. That includes cards in your hand, face-down creatures, anything that the game is telling you to look at (i.e. while you are resolving Dig Through Time you can show them the top seven cards of your library, and so on) and a few other miscellanea ("yeah, that one out you are digging for? I totally exiled it with Praetor's Grasp like seven turns ago").

This of course is a rules-of-the-game answer that doesn't take any social consideration into account. By revealing your hand you are not breaking rules but if it annoys your friends you still should not do that :)

It's perfectly legal to reveal hidden information of your own volition, regardless of your intention (accidental, political, psychological, or other).

The only prohibition is that players must not actively attempt to gain access to hidden information.

It should be noted that you're free to say "I'll Condemn your general if you attack me." That action doesn't actually require that you reveal the Condemn. Half the time, people bluff and threaten to counter or kill something.
