Is "Enchant Creature" an Enter the Battlefield ability?

Asked by Dornith 11 years ago

My friend has a Quicksilver Dragon , and I try and play Pacifism on it. He tries to redirect it, but I say that "Enchant Creature" is an EtB effect, and thus not part of the spell. We checked the rules and couldn't find anything definitive. How exactly would that work?

Auras target as a spell as per:
114.1b Aura spells are always targeted. These are the only permanent spells with targets. An Auras target is specified by its enchant keyword ability (see rule 702.5, Enchant). The target(s) are chosen as the spell is cast; see rule 601.2c. An Aura permanent doesnt target anything; only the spell is targeted. (An activated or triggered ability of an Aura permanent can also be targeted.)

You are incorrect.

Auras target as spells. When you cast an aura spell, you declare its targets, then pay its costs. The "enchant Y" ability word denotes what kind(s) of object(s) is/are legal targets.

702.5a Enchant is a static ability, written "Enchant [object or player]." The enchant ability restricts what an Aura spell can target and what an Aura can enchant.

If an aura is put onto the battlefield without being cast, then it simply becomes attached to any object it could legally enchant, according to its "enchant Y" ability.

You may be confusing auras with enchantments such as Oblivion Ring , and Detention Sphere which are not auras and thus do not target. O-ring and the like do however have ETB abilities that targets.
