Inverter of Truth Targeting

Asked by Stoic_Gaming 2 years ago

I have a question about [Inverter of Truth] and cards that share similar text. Does its ETB have a target (that being "you")? For example, when it ETBs with its effect on the stack, can I then [Bolt Bend] to change its target to my opponent? Thanks in advance.

You cannot. A target that can be changed with Bolt Bend, will always be specified as "target Creature/Player/Opponent/etc.". If the word "target" is not on the card, Bolt Bend can not change it. In the case of Inverter of Truth, it specifically mentions "your library" and not "target player's library". "Your library" on a card always means the person who controlled the spell / controlled the creature when it entered the battlefield and created the trigger.

plakjekaas Exactly the answer I was looking for, though it's too bad. Thought I found a sneaky commander wincon to build around. Thanks!

In Magic, targets are always mentioned explicitly. If you don't see "target" in the spell/ability, it is not a targeted ability.

The only exceptions are Auras and Equipment, because "enchant [object]" and "equip" are both keywords that target, but they often aren't written out (because they're keywords).
