instant tokens in attacking phase?
Asked by giantfish2003 11 years ago
I was playing a game when my friend told me if he plays an instant during his attack phase. That puts two 1/1 soldiers onto the battlefield (without haste), that they can come on attacking (card doesn't state this). Is this true?

prematurely finished the comment.
If they had haste due to Hammer of Purphoros then he would be able to attack with them.

Your opponent probably used Raise the Alarm .
To clarify, the only way that permanents can come onto the battlefield attacking is if a card says they can, like Hero of Bladehold .

Sorry CamperCarl00, just have to tell you that your use of 'due to' is, it has to be used after the verb 'to be' like 'it was due to'. I just felt the need to point that out haha

An effect only does as much as it says, and Raise the Alarm doesn't put the tokens onto the battlefield tapped and attacking. It just puts them onto the battlefield.
@nayaftw: That use of "due to" is fine, and why did you even bother pointing it out?

Rhadamanthus, it is technically speaking incorrect, but it's a common mistake and not many people even know it's wrong tbh. I'm being pedantic, but I'm definitely right ;)

@nayaftw: You're definitely wrong.
The opinion that "due to" should not be used as a preposition is a minority opinion, and there's no reason to accept it over the current commonplace application of the phrase.

When a certain usage becomes acceptable to the point where only a select few even know it's breaking a rule then that "rule" is pretty much invalid.
Also keep in mind this is the MTG Q&A forum, not the Standard English Grammar and Style forum, so try to stay on topic with your posts.

It's a bit like many people use 'dice' as a singular now, I rarely hear people saying 'pass the die' nowadays haha
But if you want incorrect grammar, it's fine :P

Don't argue with me about grammar. I'm a writer and editor by trade.

This isn't the "How to speak English 100% correctly" thread. You guys (Epochalyptik and nayaftw) should stay on topic.

I think naya's is technically correct, however this rule is hilariously obscure. It'd be like saying "he will speak to whoever he pleases" is incorrect, as it's supposed to be "whomever", but really, no-one cares. Also: the attack phase is an ambiguous term. Are you referring to the declare attackers step, the combat phase, or the beginning of combat step? In this case it doesn't really matter, as the tokens don't have haste, but if they did, then he is right if he casts Raise the Alarm or whatever token-gen spell is being talked about in the beginning of combat step.

The confusion might be that you can flash it and block immediately when your opponent is attacking.

Epochalyptik, I'm not wrong, here's proof if you don't believe me

That's not "proof." That's a sketchy-looking site attempting to establish a rule that has little bearing or precedence in Modern English.
Anyway, you're free to continue the discussion on my wall. That's enough of it for this thread.

I really don't care if the answers are grammatically correct, thank you for your answers, I do believe it was my opponents confusion between flashing in during declare attackers step, and declare blockers step. Just needed some kind magic followers to back me up. Thanks again!

I'm guessing he used Join the Ranks in which case, no, those creatures cannot come in tapped and attacking since the card doesn't state it. If they had haste due to something like Hammer of Purphoros .
