If my opponent deals me damage with a lifelink creature while I have a Platinum Emperion on the field would he gain life?

Asked by dquinn 14 years ago

Ok, so I was playing my friend. I was at one life and he had too many knights out, and I had a Platinum Emperion. He also had a True Conviction. If he attacked with a creature and I declared that I would take the damage, would he gain life?

Lifelink works based on the damage dealt to a creature or player, the fact that your life total cannot change does not "prevent" the damage the attacking creatures deal.

This would be also be the case if say Phage the Untouchable was to attack unblocked, even though your life total cannot change, she still deals the damage and causes you to lose the game.

"Yes, your opponent still gains the life. The damage was dealt just fine--it may not cause you to actually lose life, but that doesn't stop any of its other effects, in this case lifegain, from working just fine."

please link the cards you are in reference to when you ask questions

Platinum Emperion

True Conviction

The answer is right, but in addition to this I want to add something: Platinum Emperion will prevent anything that requires you from gaining or losing life from working. You still take damage, but the 'step' that converts that damage to life loss never happens. This means Platinum Emperion handily shuts down both halves of Bloodchief Ascension , Blood Tithe , or any other effects that work when your life total goes up or down.
