How much extra damage does Torbran give Blood Oath?

Asked by CamraMaan 4 years ago

Does Torbran, Thane of Red Fell only add +2 damage for the Blood Oath spell, or +2 for each card of the chosen type my opponent is holding?

IMHO, it will only add 2 damage once, since Oath counts as 1 source and damages only one target. For spells with multiple targets, the damage to each target will be increased by 2.

Torbans effect is a replacement effect that kicks in when a qualified spell resolves, then replaces the effect with +2 damage. It cares for total damage dealt to each target but doesn't know or care how the total damage was calculated.

Blood Oath will deal 0, 3, 6, or 9 damage depending on the hand reveal. Once the determination on how much damage from the Blood Oath has occurred, then Torbran's +2 will be added so you will deal 5, 8, or 11 damage from that one source.

FSims81: the damage from Blood Oath could go as high as 21 just by itself. there are 7 different card types.

Keqing420: There are actually 13 card types, only 8 of which can appear in the hand. However, for Blood Oath you choose a card type, and deal damage based on how many cards of that type are in the target's hand. If an opponent has an 18 card hand that's all land, you could deal 54 damage (56 with Torbran) to them.

Yeah, I botched that all up. For some reason it was stuck in my head that you choose three card types and deal three for each type seen. No clue how I mucked that one up so bad

Neotrup: what are 8-13?

Keqing420 I'm assuming the 7 your familiar with are the ones currently in use: Artifact, Creature, Enchantment, Instant, Land, Planeswalker, and Sorcery. Additionally, the type Tribal was in use for a while, and still sees play in some formats.

Outside of your hand, 5 more types exist, but don't appear in normal games of magic. Two are printed with regular card backs, but aren't able to be included in your deck: Conspiracy and Vanguard. Such cards start in your command zone and have abilities that effect the entire game. The other three only appear on oversized cards, so couldn't end up in your hand even by mistake: Phenomenon, Plane, and Scheme.

From the comprehensive rules:
300.1. The card types are artifact, conspiracy, creature, enchantment, instant, land, phenomenon, plane, planeswalker, scheme, sorcery, tribal, and vanguard.
