how dose Reyhan, Last of the Abzan *f-etch* work with the new death trigger change.

Asked by shadowemerald 4 years ago

Since Reyhan, Last of the Abzan checks both the graveyard and the command zone. and now the new death trigger rule your commander hits the graveyard and the command zone do you get double +1/+1 counters. Like I have Reyhan, Last of the Abzan on the field and I sack Skullbriar, the Walking Grave with 3X+1/+1 counters on it. do i get 6X+1/+1 to play with.

It only triggers one time.

Reyhan will trigger when Skullbriar dies, but when Skullbriar moves from the graveyard to the command zone it's not "a creature you control", it's a creature card in your graveyard. The move from the graveyard to the command zone won't cause Reyhan to trigger again.

ok so i get the "a creature you control" (Only objects on the stack or on the battlefield have a controller. Objects that are neither on the stack nor on the battlefield aren't controlled by any player). but putting the trigger of the commander going to the command zone put it on the stack making Skullbriar, the Walking Grave a object you control.

There's not a trigger for choosing whether to put the commander into the command zone after it goes to the graveyard. It's handled with a state-based action, just like how a token creature goes to the graveyard for a moment and then ceases to exist.

Even if there was a triggered ability here, it's just an ability, not a creature. Yes, you control the ability object while it's on the stack, but that ability still wouldn't be "a creature you control" and it's not going to the command zone. The ability is put onto the stack after it triggers and then ceases to exist after it's done resolving.

A point Rhadamanthus is making that I want to underscore, in Magic, a "creature" is always something on the battlefield. If you cast Skullbriar, the Walking Grave and it's countered, that would be a creature spell you control, not a creature, so Reyhan, Last of the Abzan wouldn't trigger. In zones other than the stack or battlefield in addition to not having a controller (only owner) they are creature cards, not creatures or creature spells.

ok i get what your say but i think you are looking at the wrong part Reyhan, Last of the Abzan said when "a creature dies". the way i understand it and creature must be on the battlefield to die and since you stopped that with a counter spell there is no death trigger.

Right, but even under the old rules, a creature being put into the command zone would also just be from the battlefield, going directly to the command zone from the stack doesn't trigger Reyhan, Last of the Abzan.

but under the old rules the put the the commander in the command zone was a replacement effect so of course it would not double. what i was getting at in the first post was that now the commander hit the graveyard and then hits the command zone. But i do get now that when it hits the graveyard it is no longer an object you control. and even though i get to choose where my commander goes that is a state-based action of EDH and not me controlling the Skullbriar, the Walking Grave

What Neotrup is saying is that under the old rules a Commander getting countered and put into the command zone is not a creature being put into the command zone. A card being referred to by just a type is a permanent on the battlefield. A card referred to by "TYPE spell" is a spell on the stack. Everywhere else it is "TYPE card".

Basically the last clause of Reyhan's trigger will no longer ever be true with the change from replacement effect to SBA. The change has made Reyhan weaker since he can no longer move counters off of an exiled commander that was sent to the command zone. It has made death triggers dealing with commanders more intuitive though, and clearing up players' confusion is always good.
