How does split second work?

Such as on the card Trickbind how would split second work? Could I use it on my own Phyrexian Dreadnought to put out a 12/12 for only 3 mana?
Yes, but then again, you could just Stifle it.
Split Second in and of itself does exactly what it says: as long as the card is on the stack, players can't activate abilities or cast spells. This wouldn't stop something that was already on the stack, however, as it does nothing to remove spells or abilities already on the stack. It does effectively prevent players from responding to your spell, although keep in mind abilities that trigger upon the casting of a spell (such as Counterbalance ) would still activate and be put on the stack, as players are not activating them.

Minor technical nitpick: triggered abilities trigger; they don't activate.

While an object with split second is on the stack, players can't cast spells or activate abilities. Triggered abilities are unaffected. Once the object with split second resolves, players are free to cast spells and activate abilities again.
In this case, I presume you'd be casting Trickbind targeting the ETB triggered ability of Phyrexian Dreadnought . That would work, but split second is irrelevant here.
