How does Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker plus Heartless Summoning work?
Asked by Blakkhand 12 years ago
For example, I have Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker on the battlefield as well as a Heartless Summoning . Then I cast Noxious Toad , which enters battlefield then the grave as it is 0/0. Here's where I am confused. At EOT, Noxious Toad comes back. It is still a 0/0, so it goes to the grave. Would it come back immediately since it is the end of turn? Or would it come back next turn? Or not at all? Thank you for your time.
To my understanding, when it comes back at your EOT and goes in the graveyard, it won't come back again until your opponent's EOT, and then it will come back and be placed in the grave again. Basically, it'll pop in once for each EOT, die, then repeat.. until Shirei leaves play.
Seems like a pretty awesome combo, though Black Cat would be a better choice of creature to utilize.

The current Oracle text of Shirei makes things a little clearer, using the updated wording of "at the beginning of the next end step". All cards printed before Magic 2010 that had "end of turn" triggers have been updated in the same way. In your example, the Noxious Toad will come back again at the end of the next turn.

I believe Noxious Toad would have to wait until the next end step (read: your opponent's) for the second return (and Shirei would have to still be on the battlefield continuously until then). Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker 's oracle text changes "at end of turn" to "at the beginning of the next end step." The beginning of end step trigger brings the Toad back the first time, but then when it dies again due to Heartless Summoning , all the beginning of end step stuff is done (since it all has to go on the stack at the same time). Hence waiting until your opponent's turn.
