How does Omnath, Locus of Mana interact with cards that double counters?

Asked by Kret 2 years ago

Let's say I have Omnath, Locus of Mana, and Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider or Hardened Scales or Branching Evolution on the battlefield. How many counters should I put on Omanth if I have Omnath and one of those cards when I tap 1 land for 1 mana. Is it 1 counter? Is it doubled counters? If it's the latter, does that mean that for each 1 mana I tap I get 2 mana/counters on Omnath? Can I use this mana as I wish in the same turn?

Omnath, Locus of Mana doesn't interact with these other cards. If a card uses counters to track the effects of its abilities, it will specifically say so in the rules text. Omnath doesn't use counters to keep track, you just track it by knowing how much happens to be in your mana pool at the moment.

Omnath, Locus of Mana description says: "gets +1/+1 for each green mana". These must be some sort of counters. If they aren't normal +1/+1 creature counters, they could be special counters (like planeswalkers' loyalty counters or like for example counters on Blast Zone etc. Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider should be able to interact with them because his description says: "If you would put one or more counters on a permanent or player, put twice that many of each of those kinds of counters". I'm thinking that these counters that result from excess mana could fall into "each of those kinds of counters"

Rhadamanthus is correct—just as a Giant Growth doesn’t place counters, neither does Omnath. As mentioned above, an effect that makes use of counters will explicitly use the word “counter(s)” in its text.
