How does Kaya's Ghostform interact with double faced cards?

Asked by DragonChampions 4 years ago

If I put Kaya's Ghostform onto Liliana, Defiant Necromancer, will it come back as Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip or Liliana, Defiant Necromancer?

711.4a While a double-faced card is outside the game, in a zone other than the battlefield, or on the battlefield with its front face up, it has only the characteristics of its front face.

711.8. A double-faced card enters the battlefield with its front face up by default. If a spell or ability puts it onto the battlefield “transformed,” it enters the battlefield with its back face up.

It will come back as Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip. Any time a Double-Faced Card enters the battlefield, it enters front face up, unless an effect or rule states otherwise. (Notably, I'm not sure how the new Double-Faced Modal cards will work, I haven't seen an official rule posting by WotC yet)

It makes sense that flickering a double land would lead to the top face (1 triangle) being face up. That is the top face.

The instants/sorceries that are also lands would also probably etb face up (not land). I believe they would then be sent to the graveyard?

VampDemigod That's all what I would think as well..

@VampDemigod

304.4. Instants can’t enter the battlefield. If an instant would enter the battlefield, it remains in its previous zone instead.

307.4. Sorceries can’t enter the battlefield. If a sorcery would enter the battlefield, it remains in its previous zone instead.

Flickering cards that are Instants or Sorceries on the front face results in them being exiled and then remaining exiled instead of entering the battlefield.

Thank you! I didn’t know they would stay in exile/graveyard!
