How do cards with Escalate work with Torrential Gearhulk?

Can I pay the cost for the extra modes?

Escalate is an additional cost, so they are not given for free by the Gearhulk. You ARE able to pay them, though, in order to get the additional effects.

Yes, you can pay the additional cost for escalate. A card's "mana cost" is just the symbols in the upper right corner, and that's what you get for free with an effect that tells you to cast something "without paying its mana cost". You're still allowed to pay any optional additional costs (like escalate), and you're required to pay any mandatory additional costs (like on Altar's Reap, etc.).
