(HOU) Did Cathartic Reunion still discard cards if casted by Wildfire Eternal?

Asked by EsperHanuman 6 years ago

Cathartic Reunion requires discard 2 cards as additional cost to cast the spell. Understanding Wildfire Eternal abilities (if goes unblocked), then no discard required anymore. Thanks

Let me make sure I understand this right.

You want to know if you still have to pay the additional cost from Cathartic Reunion if you cast it via Wildfire Eternal's ability.

If that's the case, then yes you still need to. Casting something without paying its mana cost still requires you to pay any mandatory additional costs that might come with the card.

See the additional ruling for Omniscience, which has the same effect:

7/1/2012 If you cast a card without paying its mana cost, you cant pay any alternative costs. You can pay additional costs such as kicker costs. If the card has mandatory additional costs, you must pay those.

You still have to discard.

Wildfire Eternal's ability allows you to cast the card without paying its mana cost. Remember that a mana cost is the set of values printed in a card's upper right corner. Additional costs are costs that are additional to a card's other costs (hence their name). Effects that allow you to cast something without paying its mana cost do not change additional costs; you still have to pay those.

Similarly if you cast Lightning Axe without paying it's mana cost you would still need to either discard a card or pay , despite being mana, because it is an additional cost rather than part of the mana cost listed in the upper right corner.
