Helm of the host priority

Asked by phepa 2 years ago

If opponent has 2 creatures on the board, one equiped with Helm of the Host . In his first main phase he pass priority wanting to move to Beginning of Combat step. If i cast Unsummon on his equiped creature. Does he will be able to reequip Helm of the Host (Or cast any sorcery speed spell) on his second creature after Unsummon resolves ?

My guess is, that after Unsummon resolves and stack is empty he will regain priority and the main phase continues (so he can even cast another creature) till he want to move to Combat step again? Am i right?

Yes. Once Unsummon resolves, another round of priority happens. The phase doesn't end until the stack is empty and all players pass priority.

If you wait until the beginning of combat instead (so Helm of the Host triggers) and bounce the creature, your opponent would need to equip the helmet before the ability resolves to get a token. As equip is only as a sorcery, they most likely will not be able to do this.

Neotrup, i think if Helm triggers it already has last known information about equiped creature so the token will be created even if there is no creature anymore?

Helm of the Host triggers at the beginning of combat whether it's equipped or not. If it leaves the battlefield, it will use last known information to determine what, if anything, is created when it's ability resolves, but if it's still on the battlefield it looks at what its equipped to, and whether it's equipped at all. So it's controller could destroy it in response to your bounce spell to take advantage of last known information, but I think having them burn a destruction spell and killing their own helm is probably a net will. There's this ruling on the Gatherer page:

4/27/2018 If the equipped creature leaves the battlefield before the triggered ability of Helm of the Host resolves, or if there is no equipped creature, no token is created. However, if Helm of the Host leaves the battlefield while its triggered ability is on the stack, a token will be created of the creature it last equipped. If that creature has also left the battlefield, its last known information is used to determine what the token looks like.
