Genesis Hydra

Asked by RonnieK 9 years ago

Hi guys, back at it again! Couple questions on Genesis Hydra.

1.) I could play any card, outside of a land, that I draw from what I pay for Genesis Hydra, including a planeswalker, creature, instant or aura, correct?

2.) Someone informed me that because it's not 'targetting' when I place that instant onto the battlefield.. It can still be applied to a creature that has hex-proof. Truth to this? Example. I draw Chained to the Rocks from the Hydra's cards, and apply it to an opponents Sylvan Caryatid.

Thanks!

I can answer the first part, but I'm not as clear on the second part.
The hydra says non-land permanent, and instants and sorceries are not permanents. Planeswalkers, artifacts, creatures, enchantments (including auras) are all permanents.
I do think that you were informed correctly about chained to the rocks working around the caryatid. Zur the Enchanter's ability works the same way, allowing you to bypass shroud and hexproof.

@themlsna: That is partially incorrect.

1) The permanent types are land, creature, artifact, planeswalker, and enchantment. Instants and sorceries are not permanents. They cannot exist on the battlefield. Because Genesis Hydra's ability specifies "nonland permanent," you can only get a creature, artifact, planeswalker, or enchantment card with its effect.

2) As noted above, an instant cannot exist on the battlefield. To address your more specific example, Chained to the Rocks cannot do anything to Sylvan Caryatid. Chained to the Rocks is an Aura, but it enchants a Mountain, not a creature. It has an ETB ability that targets a creature, and it is this ability that exiles the creature. The ability always targets, regardless of how Chained to the Rocks enters the battlefield.

There is a rule that if an Aura enters the battlefield by a means other than resolving as a spell, its controller attaches it to an object it could legally enchant. The "enchant [object]" ability only targets while the Aura is a spell; if it isn't a spell, the ability doesn't target anything. However, this rule only applies to the "enchant [object]" ability, not to any other abilities the Aura may have.

Note also that you don't draw anything during the resolution of Genesis Hydra's ability. The cards are revealed from your library, and up to one of them may be put onto the battlefield. At no point does any card go to your hand.
