Fling Question

Asked by Aritheall 14 years ago

Alright. Here's the scenario: I want to Fling a Goblin token of mine which has Claws of Valakut . In response to me trying to Fling my little Goblin token (sacrifice it), my opponent kills it and says that fling is now countered. However, I say that it is not countered because I haven't finished paying the cost yet, since I never actually sacrificed a creature...First, who is right, and second, what are my options if I am right? Can I choose a new target for Fling or even just not cast it and leave it in my hand?

(Since I and my opponent bother were not sure of the rules, we just rolled a dice to decide for that game and agreed to post this here later).

when you cast Fling you sac your gobo, which is part of the casting cost, so if he kills it with something, hed have to do it before you csted Fling , so you were right. he doesnt even get a chance to kill it after you cast Fling , it doesnt even exist.

your options are to just Fling the damage as you usually do with Fling , or if its just for fun, he could let you not cast it, and just say you never casted it. then when he trys to kill it, in response you Fling the gobo.

hope this helps :)

As you said, sacrificing a creature is part of paying the cost to put the spell on the stack. Your opponent can't cast anything until he has priority again, which doesn't happen until you're done putting Fling on the stack and passing priority to him. So, by the time he has priority to cast a spell to kill your creature, the token has already been sacrificed. So, you can't counter Fling this way.

There's no spell, effect, or ability in (current) Magic that works "faster" than paying the costs for a spell, either, so there's no way your opponent could kill the token in response. You will always be able to sacrifice the token to Fling before he can do anything.

This means you were right, but I'm afraid I don't get what you mean by the last bit. You're right in that he can't counter Fling ; which means you don't choose new targets or not cast it, because it's going through fine. Did you mean "what are my options if my opponent is right"?

as a general rule cost can not be countered and nothing can be done to prevent you from paying the cost unless specified (ie Platinum Emperion and card:Demon of Death's Gate).

since the cost is sacing the creature the creature is not there for your opponent to kill as a response. you can also fling creatures in response to them being killed since the cost will go through before something like Doom Blade or Lightning Bolt will be able to resolve.
