Flame Burst dragon and a Fog
Asked by runelord 13 years ago
If my oppenent attacks with a Flameblast Dragon and i use Fog the fog doesn't cancel out the dragons ability right. It only cancels the 5 combat damage.
If it's not clear, here are the 5 steps of a combat phase
1- Beginning of Combat Step2- Declare Attackers Step (This is where Flameblast Dragon ability will trigger)3- Declare Blockers Step (cast Fog at the end of this step to prevent the damage done by Flameblast attack, not his ability)4- Combat Damage Step 5- End of Combat Step

Thanks I thought that was how it would work but i just wanted a second opinion.

BigBruce, you answer is slightly off. Combat damage is specifically damage assigned by an attacking or blocking creature. For instance, even if you use an ability that deals damage in the Combat Damage Step, it is not combat damage. Spikeshot Elder is a good example. Say you attack with him equipped with Sword of Feast and Famine , then activate his ability during the Combat Damage Step. Only the damage he assigns from attacking is combat damage, so the sword will only trigger once if he is unblocked, not for each time Spikeshot Elder deals damage in the Combat Damage Step. Rule 510.1a technically states that only attacking or blocking creatures can deal combat damage, it also states that the 'combat damage' that a creatures assigns is equal to its power. From the MTG Comprehensive Rulebook:
510.1a Each attacking creature and each blocking creature assigns combat damage equal to its power. Creatures that would assign 0 or less damage this way don't assign combat damage at all.
Sorry if you already knew that BigBruce, I just wanted to clear that up for runelord!

Exactly, combat damage is only done in the combat damage step and the ability of Flameblast Dragon is done even before declaring defenders.
So in short, you've answered your own question :P
