Exiling an artifact

Asked by Baddie 12 years ago

If an artifact is equipped onto a creature and the creature is exiled, is the artifact exiled as well or does it automatically become unequipped and return to the battlefield?

It simply returns to the battlefield as an unused piece of equipment. If you paid an equip cost then you simply attached it to that creature, if the creature leaves it returns to the battlefield unpaired with anything until you pay the mana cost to re-attach it to another creature. Unless they specifically target an artifact, it would not be destroyed.

What card in particular are you asking about? That would definitely help to answer the question.

To be more accurate, the creature will be exiled, the equipment will be on the battlefield. Note that the equipment never left the battlefield or returned.

Assuming you have a Grizzly Bears equipped with a Sword of Vengeance and your opponent casts Iona's Judgment targeting your Grizzly Bears , upon resolution your Bear will be exiled and your Sword will be on the battlefield unequipped, waiting to be equipped to another creature.

If the exile card is something like Cloudshift that exiles a creature and then returns it to play, the creature and the equipment will be on the battlefield but the equipment will be unequipped. Note that again, the equipment never left the battlefield. It became unequipped when the creature left but did not leave with it.

The only cards that will take the equipment with the creature are things like Soul Nova , which you'll note specifically states that the equipment is exiled as well. Similar cards are Eaten by Spiders and Turn to Slag , which destroy rather than exile.

Eaten by Spiders also immediately exiles all opponents named Ron Weasley.

Heck, it'd exile me too.
