EtB effects and enchanted evening

Asked by durzostarfire 8 years ago

I was wondering when Enchanted Evening ability took place. So if I had an Ajani's Chosen out and played Enchanted Evening would I get infinite tokens?

No. Ajani's Chosen's activated ability only works when an enchantment enters the battlefield, not when it is already on the battlefield.

but if Ajani's Chosen was in play, and I cast Enchanted Evening wouldn't the tokens the entered then activate Ajani's Chosen again and again?

I'l agree with durzostarfire - the tokens entering the battlefield will be Enchantments, therefore triggering the ability of Ajani's Chosen. That's not necessarily good for you, though, as the game will end in a draw unless one player can (and wants to) break the loop. If you have Impact Tremors on the battlefield, you're in good shape, though!

Enchanted Evening has a static ability that is simply true of the game. All permanents are enchantments, full stop. Each token entering would trigger Ajani's Chosen and you would put another token in. Unless you have a way to destroy Ajani's Chosen or Enchanted Evening or win off of the tokens entering then the game would draw.

Of note: either Ajani's Chosen or Enchanted Evening could be on the battlefield first and then the other entering starts the infinite trigger loop. Ajani's Chosen entering as an enchantment would trigger its own ability to put a token in according to 603.6a.

603.6a Enters-the-battlefield abilities trigger when a permanent enters the battlefield. These are written, "When [this object] enters the battlefield, . . . " or "Whenever a [type] enters the battlefield, . . ." Each time an event puts one or more permanents onto the battlefield, all permanents on the battlefield (including the newcomers) are checked for any enters-the-battlefield triggers that match the event.

First, Ajani's Chosen's ability is not an activated ability. It's a triggered ability.

Ajani's Chosen's ability triggers whenever an enchantment enters the battlefield. If Ajani's Chosen is already on the battlefield, resolving Enchanted Evening will cause its ability to trigger. As each token enters the battlefield, it will be an enchantment and will cause Ajani's Chosen's ability to trigger again.

As BlueScope said, this loop is actually infinite and will continue to repeat until something interrupts it. If no player does, then the game ends in a draw.
